Jesus spoke of how to approach offenses in the Kingdom. If one sins against you go alone to rectify it. Offended approaches offender. If the offense is resolved, great. If not, take witnesses and try again. If the offense is then resolved, wonderful. If not, take your witnesses before the council and make your case. The council’s word will be binding.
Peter sought to quantify. “How often do I forgive one who offends me? Seven times?”
“No,” Jesus replied. “Seventy times seven.” In other words, always. “The kingdom works like this: …” With that Jesus told a story about a forgiven debtor who would not forgive. And the consequences were severe.
So the question comes, what exactly is forgiveness? Sunday we take a good look at forgiveness from the Hebrew perspective to seek to discover what Jesus had in mind.
